The NBA has penalized the Atlanta Hawks $100,000 for breaching the league’s Player Participation Policy following Trae Young’s absence during the November 12 game against the Boston Celtics.
An investigation by the NBA, including an assessment from an independent medical professional, revealed that Young, despite being listed as unavailable due to right Achilles tendinitis, could have played under the policy’s medical standards. This policy emphasizes showcasing top talent during regular-season games, particularly those within the new NBA Cup competition.
Despite Young’s absence, the Hawks secured a narrow 117-116 victory over Boston. Trae Young, a three-time NBA All-Star, has been a standout performer this season, averaging 21.9 points, 11.9 assists (an NBA-high), and 3.6 rebounds per game. Atlanta currently holds the 11th spot in the Eastern Conference standings with a 7-11 record.
In a separate incident, Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown was fined $35,000 for inappropriate behavior during a recent loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Brown’s heated interaction with the officiating crew during the game reflected mounting frustrations, as the Kings dropped to 12th in the Western Conference with an 8-10 record after enduring a four-game losing streak.
