Suspended Stars and Players on the Brink: Who’s In, Who’s Out?
Who’s sitting out and who’s on thin ice? Matchweek 17 sees suspensions shake up the Premier League lineup, with big names like Emerson and Joelinton missing out. Discover the full list of banned and borderline players!
The Premier League’s disciplinary actions have taken center stage as multiple players face suspensions this week. Here’s the latest on who’s ruled out and why:
West Ham United’s Emerson will miss their clash against AFC Bournemouth after accumulating five yellow cards.
Andrew Robertson (Liverpool) was sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity but will serve his suspension in the EFL Cup against Southampton, keeping him eligible for Premier League fixtures.
Andreas Pereira (Fulham) and Joelinton (Newcastle United) will sit out their respective games against Southampton and Ipswich Town after reaching the five-yellow card threshold.
Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz will miss the critical matchup against Arsenal following his fifth yellow card in the 3-1 win over Brighton.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves) faces a one-match suspension after receiving two yellow cards during their defeat to Ipswich Town. Notably, the cards don’t affect his total for the yellow card suspension limit.
Marc Cucurella (Chelsea) finds himself in a similar situation, banned for the trip to Everton but maintaining his six yellow cards for the season.
Jack Stephens (Southampton) is halfway through a four-match ban following a red card for violent conduct in Matchweek 14.
Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottenham) will miss one more Premier League game and the EFL Cup quarter-final as part of a seven-match suspension for violating FA rules.
Players Returning from Suspensions
Some clubs can breathe a sigh of relief as key players are available again:
Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, Spurs’ Yves Bissouma, Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, Leicester City’s Boubakary Soumare, and Wolves’ Joao Gomes are all cleared for Matchweek 17 after serving their one-match suspensions.
Rico Lewis (Manchester City) is back after missing the Manchester derby due to a red card in Matchweek 15.
Fulham captain Tom Cairney is also ready to return following a ban for serious foul play.
Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has completed his one-match suspension, initially slated for the postponed Merseyside derby, and is expected to feature in their Matchweek 17 clash against Spurs.
Players on the Verge of Suspension
Yellow cards are piling up for several players, putting them at risk of missing future matches.
Five Yellow Cards Threshold: Players earning five yellow cards in their first 19 games will serve a one-match suspension. A few notable names on four yellow cards include Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal), Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), and Darwin Nunez (Liverpool).
Ten Yellow Cards Rule: Any player accumulating ten yellow cards in their first 32 league matches will face a two-game suspension.
Notably, yellow cards from league fixtures don’t carry over to domestic cup competitions, offering some players temporary reprieve.
