Transitioning from Ohio State University to the NFL is a common path for many athletes, but Praise Olatoke’s journey stands out. The former Buckeyes track athlete, who first encountered football through club football at college, has achieved his dream by signing with the Los Angeles Chargers via the NFL International Player Pathway Program (IPPP).

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and raised in Scotland from the age of five, Olatoke’s early years were filled with rugby and sprinting. He earned a scholarship at Canada’s Trinity Western University before transferring to Ohio State in 2021, where he joined the track team. Despite a torn Achilles tendon setting him back, he discovered a passion for football through the club team at Ohio State.

Olatoke’s football journey began modestly, initially struggling to put on his gear. However, his potential became evident when he caught a 65-yard touchdown pass against Michigan State in his second game. This club football experience was a far cry from the high-profile NCAA team, but it was the start of something big.

A basketball enthusiast at heart, Olatoke might have pursued a different path if not for his height. Opting for football, he rapidly rose through the ranks thanks to the NFL IPPP at IMG Academy, where he caught the attention of scouts with his impressive speed and dedication.

Although his initial workout with the Philadelphia Eagles did not result in a contract, the Chargers quickly saw his potential. Despite initial uncertainty, Olatoke was offered a contract after a promising rookie minicamp with the team. He is now a member of the Chargers, joining fellow Nigerian CJ Okoye as part of the IPPP’s standout recruits.

The Chargers, who finished 5-12 last season, hope that Olatoke’s incredible pace and willingness to learn will add a new dynamic to their roster. Alongside his friend and former rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, Olatoke brings an electrifying presence to the league. While the challenge of competing against seasoned NFL players lies ahead, Olatoke’s journey from club football to the NFL is a testament to his perseverance and talent.
