World Para Athletics (WPA) has officially launched the process for selecting host cities for the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships and the 2027 World Para Athletics U20 Championships, two of the most prestigious events in Para sport. Cities have until 1 April 2025 to submit their formal Expression of Interest to bid for these global events, which provide opportunities to showcase elite athletic talent and promote social change.

A Global Platform for Inclusion

The World Para Athletics Championships is the largest single Para sport event in the world. Held biennially, it features over 1,000 elite athletes from across the globe, competing in over 160 track and field events. Beyond the athletic excellence on display, the event serves as a powerful platform for promoting diversity, inclusion, and changing perceptions about persons with disabilities, who make up approximately 15% of the global population.

The junior counterpart, the World Para Athletics U20 Championships, focuses on young athletes, offering them a chance to compete internationally and represent their nations. This event is not only a stepping stone for future stars but also encourages youth participation in sports, fostering confidence, independence, and ambition among young people with disabilities.

Host City Benefits

Hosting these events offers more than just a boost in sporting prestige. Host cities will gain the opportunity to:

  • Showcase their infrastructure and organizational capabilities on a global stage.
  • Drive economic impact through tourism and event-related spending.
  • Create lasting social legacies by promoting accessibility and inclusion.
  • Inspire future generations by spotlighting the abilities and achievements of Para athletes.

The Path to Selection

Interested cities can apply by submitting their Expression of Interest via the official WPA portal. Applications will be reviewed by the organization, with preferred hosts identified for further discussions and feasibility assessments. Notifications will be sent to all applicants following the review process.

New Delhi, India, is set to host the 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships later this year, showcasing its ability to host world-class events. Future host cities are encouraged to follow this example by providing a stage for the world’s most inspiring athletes.
