Premier League Suspension Watch: Key Players Out or On the Brink

Stay ahead of the game with our Premier League suspension watch. Discover which players are sidelined due to red or yellow card suspensions and who’s just a caution away from a ban.

Lisandro Martínez

In the Premier League, managing suspensions is critical for every team, as missing key players can dramatically impact results. Here’s the latest on players serving bans and those dangerously close to hitting the suspension threshold.

Who Is Suspended?

Currently, three players are serving suspensions, sidelined due to disciplinary actions during recent matches.

  • Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal): The midfielder received a straight red card for serious foul play in Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. As a result, Lewis-Skelly faces a three-match ban, which includes Premier League clashes against Manchester City and Leicester City, as well as the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United. Arsenal may appeal the decision, but for now, he remains unavailable.
  • Joao Gomes (Wolves): After being sent off for two yellow cards in the same match, Gomes will sit out Wolves’ Premier League fixture against Aston Villa in Matchweek 24.
  • Konstantinos Mavropanos (West Ham United): The center-back saw red after a double booking during West Ham’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Mavropanos will miss the Hammers’ Matchweek 23 clash against Aston Villa.

Who Is Close to a Ban?

As teams have now surpassed the 19-match mark in the season, the yellow card suspension threshold has increased. Players receiving 10 yellow cards within their first 32 matches will face a two-match suspension. Notably, yellow card tallies are not carried over to domestic cup competitions.

Currently, two players are walking on thin ice with nine yellow cards each:

  • Sasa Lukic (Fulham): The midfielder has been instrumental for Fulham but must tread carefully to avoid a two-match suspension.
  • Flynn Downes (Southampton): With Southampton battling for points, Downes’ availability remains crucial as he sits just one caution away from missing action.

Several other players are also nearing the 10-card mark and should be monitored closely:

What This Means for Teams

Suspensions can significantly affect team dynamics, especially in tightly contested matches. Clubs must carefully manage their players to avoid losing key contributors at crucial points in the season. Fans and managers alike will be hoping these players avoid further infractions to maintain full-strength squads.
