British tennis legend Andy Murray, on his farewell tour at the Paris 2024 Olympics, secured another thrilling victory alongside Dan Evans to advance to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles.

Murray, 37, plans to retire at the end of the Games but showed he’s not ready to bow out just yet. The British duo triumphed over Belgium’s Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen with a 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 11-9 win in the second round.

Despite missing two match points in the second-set tie-break, Murray and Evans clinched their victory on the third match point in the final tie-break, narrowly escaping two match points from their opponents. The win led to jubilant celebrations, with Evans sealing the match with a volley and the pair sharing an emotional embrace.

Murray was visibly moved, appearing to shed tears as he sat in his chair reflecting on the intense match. Their next opponents are yet to be determined, with American third seeds Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul potentially awaiting them if they overcome the Dutch pair Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojen.

Murray and Evans, both of whom have battled injuries this year, will have a day off before returning to action on Thursday. In other men’s doubles action, Spanish stars Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal also moved into the last eight, defeating the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof.

Nadal expressed his enjoyment of playing alongside Alcaraz, and the duo is set on the opposite side of the draw from Murray and Evans, meaning a potential showdown could only happen in the final.
