In a significant development for Ethiopian athletics, Seleshi Sehin, a distinguished former athlete, has been named the new president of the Ethiopian Athletic Federation (EAF). Sehin’s election took place during the Federation’s 28th Ordinary General Assembly, where he secured 11 out of 26 votes, succeeding Derartu Tulu, the former Olympic medalist who held the position previously.
With over 15 years of experience as a competitive runner, Sehin has built a remarkable career, excelling in a variety of disciplines including marathons, half marathons, cross-country, and both long-distance and middle-distance races. His athletic journey placed him alongside iconic Ethiopian runners like Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele, in the celebrated era known as the “Green Flood.” This generation of Ethiopian athletes, following in the footsteps of legends such as Abebe Bikila, Mamo Wolde, and Mruts Yifter, dominated global athletics.
Sehin’s appointment is seen as a positive step toward revitalizing Ethiopian athletics. His extensive background in the sport and strong moral character are expected to help restore the Federation’s standing and elevate Ethiopian athletes to new heights, fostering a new era of success on the world stage.
