Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away after being doused in petrol and set on fire by her ex-boyfriend. The 33-year-old, who recently competed in the Paris Olympics, succumbed to her injuries days after the horrific attack in north-west Kenya.

Cheptegei, a beloved figure in the athletic community, was known for her generosity and dedication to the sport. Fellow athletes described her as a supportive and caring figure who often helped others financially.

The violent incident took place after Cheptegei returned home from church with her two young daughters. According to reports, her ex-partner, with whom she had an ongoing dispute over land, attacked her outside her home. Both Cheptegei and her ex-partner sustained burns, with the former boyfriend currently being treated in intensive care.

Cheptegei’s passing is a devastating blow to her family and the athletic community. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, mourned the loss of his daughter, whom he described as the family’s “breadwinner,” leaving behind two children aged 12 and 13.

The athlete, who achieved great success in her career, including winning gold at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand, is remembered not only for her athletic achievements but also for her kindness and contributions to fellow runners.

The Kenyan and Ugandan authorities are currently investigating the attack, with calls for justice growing louder. The incident has reignited concerns about violence against women in the region, especially following similar tragedies involving athletes Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua in recent years.

Cheptegei’s untimely death marks yet another heartbreaking chapter in the fight against domestic violence in East Africa, where many female athletes have tragically lost their lives.
