Tragic Training Incident Leads to Manslaughter Charges for UK Athletics

UK Athletics faces manslaughter charges following the tragic death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei, who passed away in 2017 after a training accident at Newham Leisure Centre in London. Hayayei, a 36-year-old athlete from the United Arab Emirates, lost his life when a metal throwing cage collapsed during preparations for the World Para Athletics Championships.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has formally charged UK Athletics Limited with corporate manslaughter and violations of health and safety regulations. Additionally, Keith Davies, a senior official for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and breaches of workplace safety laws. Davies, 77, and UK Athletics are scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31.

At the time of the incident, Hayayei was training to compete in the F34 shot put, discus, and javelin events at the London 2017 World Championships. Known for his exceptional talent, Hayayei had made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, where he achieved top-ten finishes in the javelin and shot put. His second World Championships appearance was highly anticipated after strong performances at the Doha 2015 event, where he secured fifth and eighth-place finishes in discus and shot put, respectively.

The devastating loss of the athlete, a father of five, cast a somber shadow over the London 2017 Championships. Organizers paid tribute to his memory with a moment of silence during the event’s opening ceremony, reflecting the profound impact of his passing on the global sporting community.
